A late winner from Virgil Van Dijk meant Liverpool are now through to the 4th round of the FA Cup.
The reds went 1-0 up early in the first half through a James Milner penalty after a controversial penalty decision was awarded by Bobby Madley. Mason Holgate had wrapped his arms around Adam Lallana and the Englishman fell to the ground with Madley pointing to the spot. James Milner calmly tucked the ball away and gave Liverpool the lead.
Late in the first half, Roberto Firmino and Mason Holgate had engaged in a war of words after Holgate had pushed Firmino into the crowds in what could be described as a reckless act.
In the 67th minute, Everton had levelled the game through a brilliant counter attack as Adeola Lookman’s pass found an unlikely source in Phill Jakielka who burst forward to set up Gylfi Sigurðsson who placed the ball into the bottom corner to level the game up.
Everton piled the pressure but nothing good came from it.
In the 84th minute, the Kop erupted as the £75m defender, Virgil Van Dijk, rose highest to head in the winner from an Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain header on his Anfield debut.
The winner sees Liverpool progress to the 4th round of the FA Cup.
Liverpool are now 16 games unbeaten in all competitions against Everton which makes it their longest run against them in their entire history.
Liverpool 2 (Milner 35′ (P), Van Dijk 84′)
