The San Francisco 49ers have finally found their franchise quarterback and it’s Jimmy Garoppolo.
The 49ers sign the ex-New England Patriot quarterback to a five-year $137.5m contract which makes him the highest paid quarterback in NFL history. Garoppolo’s deal means he will earn roughly $27.5m a year.
The 26 year old quarterback was drafted by the Patriots in the 2nd round of the 2014 NFL Draft from Eastern Illinois.
During his tenure with the New England Patriots, he won two Super Bowls as a backup QB against the Seattle Seahawks and Atlanta Falcons.
Garoppolo’s tenure with the Patriots ended in 2017 when he was traded to the San Francisco 49ers for a 2nd round draft pick.
With Garoppolo as the starting quarterback, San Francisco won five straight games ending the season with a 6-10 record.
His contract extension is good news for the 49ers who have struggled at the quarterback position since Colin Kapernick’s decline.
