Real Madrid come into this match 15 points behind Barcelona who face Atletico Madrid on Sunday in a crucial La Liga match for the title.
The hosts were looking to bounce back from their midweek defeat against Espanyol as they entertain Getafe at the Santiago Bernabeu.
The opening ten minutes of the game saw little action as neither team could find a way to breakthrough.
The games first chance fell to Getafe’s Angel Rodriguez in the 19th minute. The Spanish forward cut the ball onto his favoured left foot but his shot was calmly collected by . Keylor Navas.
However, four minutes later, the deadlock was broken and it was Gareth Bale who opened up the scoring for Real Madrid with his 11th goal of the season. Karim Benzema floated in a delightful ball to Isco who set up Gareth Bale in the penalty box with the Welshman striking the ball into the back of the net.
This was Bale’s 11th goal in 18 appearances for the club.
Minutes before half time, Real Madrid doubled their lead through Cristiano Ronaldo. Karim Benzema put the ball onto Ronaldo’s feet and it looked like his chance of scoring had disappeared, but the Portuguese international somehow managed to find a gap and fire the ball into the back of the net for his 300th La Liga goal.
Seconds before half-time, Ronaldo nearly had his second of the night but his shot went over the bar to end a dominating half for Real Madrid.
Getafe started the second half well with Loic Remy having his shot saved by Navas. However, their night went from bad to worse as Remy was sent off for a second bookable offence. Remy had put his arm across Nacho’s face and the Frenchman’s night was cut early.
The momentum had shifted in the 63rd minute when Getafe were awarded a penalty after Nacho had fouled Jorge Molina in the penalty box. However, it was clear that Nacho had got the ball and had there been VAR, the decision would have been overruled. Francisco Portillio took the penalty and sent Navas the wrong way to make it 2-1.
Moments later, Ronaldo had scored to make it 3-1 but the linesman gave a foul to Getafe after it was judged that Ronaldo had shoved a Getafe defender. The Portuguese striker went close minutes later but Martinez had made a wonderful save to deny him.
With less than 20 minutes remaining in the game, Madrid were piling on the pressure and it seemed as if a goal was imminent.
The goal finally came for Real Madrid in the 78th minute and who else but Cristiano Ronaldo. Marcelo had delivered a brilliant cross into the penalty area and Ronaldo headed in Madrid’s third of the night and his 16th of the season.
The goal also meant Cristiano Ronaldo has reached 30 goals in all competitions in each of his nine seasons with the club.
A dominating performance from Real Madrid as they overcame their midweek defeat to Espanyol in convincing fashion. Goals from Gareth Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo were enough to give Madrid three points as they prepare for PSG in the Last-16 of the Champions League.
