A Ronaldo Masterclass Puts Real Madrid Within Touching Distance Of The Champions League Semi-Finals

Real Madrid and Juventus meet in the Quarter-Finals of the Champions League, a repeat of last years Champions League final in Cardiff.

It wasn’t the greatest of starts for Juventus as Cristiano Ronaldo gave Real Madrid an early lead inside three minutes. Isco’s cross from the left hand side fell to Cristiano Ronaldo and the Portuguese international put the ball into net to give Madrid the lead. The goal also gives the Spanish side the all-important away goal.

Raphael Varane nearly doubled Madrid’s lead in the 10th minute through a corner but his header went over the bar.

Juventus came close to equalising in the 22nd minute through a set-piece. Pablo Dybala’s free-kick fell to Gonzalo Higuain and his shot was brilliantly saved by Keylor Navas. Either side of Navas and the score would’ve been levelled.

In the 33rd minute, Juventus came close again through right-back Mattia De Sciglio. His long range effort went inches wide of Navas’ posts. A slight touch from any Juventus player could’ve resulted in a goal.

Minutes later, Toni Kroos came close with a thunderous effort which had Buffon beaten but the crossbar came to Juventus’ rescue.

Moments before half-time, Juventus had a penalty shout. Chiellini’s header fell to Casemiro who looked to have handled the ball but their protests were waived away by the referee. A minute before the break, Pablo Dybala looked to have been fouled in the penalty box but the referee had booked the Argentinian for simulation.

An action packed half came to an end with Real Madrid in the lead thanks to Cristiano Ronaldo’s 3rd minute strike.

Second Half:

The first chance of the second half fell to Real Madrid and it was Cristiano Ronaldo who nearly got his second of the night. The ball fell to Ronaldo outside the six-yard box and his strike went inches wide of Buffon’s post.

In the 55th minute, Sergio Ramos conceded a foul which resulted in a booking the defender. The yellow card means Ramos will miss the second-leg due to suspension. The ensuing free-kick from Dybala came close for Juventus as his shot was deflected by the wall and kept Navas mounted to his spot.

In the 64th minute, Cristiano Ronaldo provided a moment of magic with a spectacular overhead kick to give Real Madrid a 2-0 lead, a goal that even Juventus fans applauded. The Portuguese winger rose highest and his acrobatic finish left Buffon mounted to his spot as he watched the ball go past him.

The night got even worse for Juventus as Pablo Dybala picked up a second yellow card for kicking Carvajal in the chest.

The tie was over for the Italian side when Marcelo added a third for Real Madrid in the 72nd minute. The Brazilian played a one-two with Ronaldo before lifting the ball over Buffon and slotting in for their third of the night.

It was a game to forget for Juventus as they suffered a humiliating defeat at the hands of Real Madrid. Two goals from Ronaldo including a brilliant overhead kick and a goal from Marcelo means they travel home with three away goals. Juventus will be without striker Pablo Dybala after being sent off in the first leg.
